Caillat shines brighter than the sun at Mountain Winery

Reporter discusses her experience this summer at Colbie Calliat's concert at the Saratoga Mountain Winery.

When my parents told me that singer and musician Colbie Caillat was performing at Saratoga Mountain Winery to start her national tour, I couldn’t contain myself. I begged my parents to get me tickets. They agreed on one condition — my mom wanted to go too. I was fine with that, however, and they even gave me two extra tickets for friends.

On July 7 we drove up the windy road to the winery, listening to some of Colbie’s songs to get us ready for the concert. If you’ve never gone to the Mountain Winery, it’s a gorgeous area twined with grape vines that align the roads. It offers a view of the valley that is awe-worthy.

The theater itself is a relatively small, outdoor dome. Our seats were in the middle toward the back, but we were able to see fine.

We arrived just in time to watch the opening act. Shane Harper, also known as Spencer Walsh from Disney Channel’s “Good Luck Charlie,” performed a number of original songs. I have to admit, I got a little starstruck because I wasn’t expecting two celebrities in one night.

After an intermission, the main event began. Colbie kept her performance low key and welcoming. She liked talking to her audience and gave background to each of her songs. I was amazed by how modest she was, and I was especially shocked when she told us she has stage fright. She seemed pretty comfortable to me, though, even taking off her shoes near the end of the show.

I knew a lot of the songs she performed and sang along to a number of them. She also played parts of her latest album “Gypsy Heart,” which I enjoyed immensely. Of course, she ended with “Brighter Than the Sun,” which got people up onto their feet, dancing and singing along.

This concert was a highlight of my summer. Colbie Calliat is an amazing singer and performed in a way that made the whole show seem upbeat and light-hearted. If you get the chance, I highly recommend going to see Colbie Calliat in concert.
