Another math course to be checked off

Reporter rants about students who skip math classes and then struggle in a higher level class.

I find it difficult to pity those students who skipped Geometry through a summer course and subsequently bemoan their current math class (often this is Algebra 2 Honors). Are you really going to complain about the pace of the class or the grade you receive when in reality, you are the root of your current struggles? Because of these students, teachers must slow down and go over concepts people evidently should have known, but didn’t know, because they just weren’t ready to skip a year’s worth of math. This reduces the quality of the class and time that could have been spent on more meaningful discussions. By succumbing to the bandwagon, these students perpetuate the mentality that math is to be sped through as quickly as everyone else, and that each successive course is just another box checked off on a list.
